Moggans Socks Are Made For The Camino

Our socks walk the walk, mile after mile

As Moggans continues to grow, we’re excited to be working with an inspiring community of adventurers whose experience and stories we’ll start sharing with you. This is the first of a new series of newsletters were we’ll spotlight tips and tricks, outdoor inspiration, and the people pushing boundaries in the mountains, on the trails, and everywhere in between.

"We now only ever wear Moggans for our Caminos. They have never let us down or given us blisters and they wash and dry better than most alternatives. Heading for the Via De La Plata in June with a couple of pairs that have done over 1000k and 2 fresh pairs. Expecting the heat to hit 45-50° for 35km per day and for Moggans to continue to be an imperative for our 1200km + journey and preparation. We cannot afford to compromise on foot health. Great value and UK based."

A Journey Of A Lifetime On The Camino De Santiago

The Camino de Santiago is a unique experience, but also a serious challenge for the body, particularly the feet!

From one stage to the full 800 km, taking care of your feet should be your first concern. Starting with your socks.

What You Need to Know

The Camino de Santiago was traditionally a religious pilgrimage, which many started from their home. The end point? The cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Nowadays there are several routes, which will suit different abilities and interests. Here are some the most famous:

> Camino Frances - the French Camino - starts in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (France). It’s the most popular route and a very spectacular one, covering mountainous areas, going through Pamplona and the north of Spain. The total distance covered is 800 km (485 miles) - but many choose to do the last 113.5 km stage, from Sarria to Santiago. This typically takes about 7 days and goes through the Galicia region of Spain. You’ll still get a pilgrim’s completion certificate for doing this stage only.

> Camino Portugues - the Portuguese Camino - is the second most popular way, starting in Lisbon and covering almost 600 km. You’ll be going through some beautiful cities and passing close to a revered Catholic pilgrimage site at Fatima (option to take a detour to see it). There is also a Coastal version of this Camino, covering 270km on the coast from Porto to Santiago.

> Le Puy Camino extends further back into France, connecting Le-Puy-en-Velay in the volcanic region of Auvergne, to the start of the Camino Frances. Along 732 km, you’ll come across UNESCO World Heritage Sites, climb many steep hills, and arrive at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. From here, you can tag on the 800 km to Santiago de Compostela, or come back the following year!

Whether you choose to do a few stages of one of the Camino routes or a whole one end-to-end pilgrimage, the experience is unmatched. Beyond the physical challenge, you’ll go through spiritual and psychological transformations, meeting many others and possibly discovering something new about yourself and where you want to go in life.

Why Choose Merino Wool Socks?

Your feet will carry you on the long journey to Santiago, through widely varying temperatures and underfoot conditions. Merino wool socks will keep you warm and cosy when it’s getting chilly, but wick away moisture and let your feet breathe, no matter how hot it gets on the trails.

Moggans socks offer:

  • Softness and all-day comfort
  • Breathability and moisture-wicking to keep feet cool and dry
  • Temperature regulation in both hot and cold conditions
  • Reduced risk of blisters and irritation
  • UV protection and natural elasticity for a secure, flexible fit
  • Sustainably sourced: 100% natural, renewable and biodegradable
  • Mulesing-free Merino wool, prioritising animal welfare

P.S. Did you know Merino wool is also naturally odour resistant? An important fact when it’s not easy to find somewhere to wash your socks (and no-one likes smelly feet - especially if you’re sharing sleeping quarters along the Camino!)

Luckily, unlike synthetics, Merino wool absorbs the vapours of moisture that help bacteria grow and lead to that unpleasant odour. It even locks in odour molecules from your sweat, releasing them only when you wash them.

Lightweight, durable, and built for adventure. Moggans socks are made to endure every step of your journey.

So… What’s A Moggan? 🧶

A moggan is a traditional Scottish word for a thick wool sock or leg warmer. These are often worn for warmth in cold, rugged conditions. Historically, they were hand-knit and worn by crofters, fishermen, and hillwalkers. Moggans were built for durability and comfort in the harsh Scottish climate.

At Moggans, the name is a nod to that heritage: modern performance socks rooted in tradition, made for the outdoors and built to last.
